January 15 2008 Business Travel ForecastWith the cost of business travel expected to rise at least 6% in 2008, managing your travel spend becomes even more critical.
By Tracy Newton - Manager, Business Travel Services for Carlson Wagonlit Travel
January 10, 2008 - It’s the start of another new year, and you may have noticed talks of travel in the news. In fact, if you have traveled lately, you've also noticed planes flying at capacity, frequent delays, fewer flights & more cancellations, not to mention new surcharges for fuel and everything imaginable including seats and luggage.
What does this mean to you? Rising prices, aging navigation technology at airports and a variety of other situations related to travel are becoming a growing concern for business travelers. With the surge in demand and increasing fuel costs, prices are on the rise -- and are expected to continue rising in the coming months in the upwards of 6-8%, maybe more. Air carriers and hoteliers see this as the long-awaited swing to the seller's market.
With the sellers rejoicing, how can you, as a company control spending in 2008?
Measure All Business Travel Spend
You can only change that which you can measure.
By measuring and closely monitoring your business travel spend, you can quickly identify opportunities to save while also creating balance between cost containment and employee comfort based on your business goals and objectives.
Many businesses are surprised to see this information – often unaware of how much is really being spent in T&E. By drilling down in the data, you can plan accordingly and make minor adjustments if necessary. When you see areas that need improvement, simply make small changes to your travel policy to achieve the desired results.
Revise Your Travel Policy
Chances are your travel policy has not been reviewed in some time; in fact, some companies do not even have a written policy for business travelers to follow. With the state of our economy and travel trends for 2008, this is going to become increasingly important to monitor.
Your policy should be reviewed by a professional on a regular basis & redistributed to employees as economic and industry changes transpire. An actively managed travel policy is the best way to ensure travelers are traveling safely & comfortably while also complying with the company’s goals and objectives.
Make Time For Change
There's no better time that the present - in fact, now is a great time to initiate changes in your travel program.
With an already full workload, we often find that travel is not ‘that’ important. Making the initial change may seem like too much work, but it takes no more than a few business days to get everything on track. In no time you will be thankful you invested your time in this short process.
You can rely on your travel partner to navigate the upcoming industry changes work with suppliers and look out for your best interest, resulting in cost containment and savings that will have an effect on your bottom line. As travel prices begin to rise, now is a critical time to keep a close eye on your travel spending and make your short-term and long-term strategic adjustments. Many of these changes necessitate travel policy or behavioral changes, which require efforts beyond daily responsibilities. Don’t wait until it is too late December 01 Here we go...Just 24 hours ago, I decided to give this whole 'blogging' thing a shot...
So here we go!
It is my intention is to build a practical bridge between the personal & professional sides of my life in hopes of sharing my thoughts and relative experiences with my friends & colleagues in a useful way. So I felt it was an appropriate time to share a little about me.
I have two passions in life: Travel & Yoga
How I managed to make a living at both is still a mystery to me, but I feel truly blessed...
I am taking this opportunity to share a little bit about what I do, the bigger picture, the possibilities, and passions that fuel my ideas.
(PART 1) TRAVEL MANAGER
As a business travel consultant - my primay function is to work with companies that have traveling employees and identify ways to save time, and money. I uncover lost savings opportunities and help to fine-tune travel policies and structure a proactive travel management program. I analyze data, keep up with industry trends, and keep a focused eye on my customers goals and objectives.
Lately I have been working with my clients to really buckle down and get a grip on all areas of travel that are not being proactively managed. I REALLY enjoy it, so it doesn't feel like work.
One thing I have noticed lately, is that in 2008 the cost of travel is expected to rise dramatically (I will post supporting docs on my page under 'Business Travel' as soon as I learn how!!) It is my prediction that businesses that are not proactive with their travel management are going to be in for a big surprise. My phone has started to ring a lot more in recent months, and I expect that will increase even more in Q108.
Every business goes though a lifecycle, and managed travel is definitely on the rise... travelers are now re-discovering the value of human interaction, and customer service. The internet was once a great way to save money, but the times have changed... the 'deals' have slowly faded and consumers are finally starting to catch on. So keep an eye out... TRAVEL MANAGEMENT IS ON THE RISE!!!!
In fact, managed travel and expense management programs are becoming a highly saught after tool for smart companies...
In 2008 you may not remember me, but you will remember this random blog!
(PART 2) YOGA INSTRUCTOR
Yoga has gotten me through some crrrrrrrazy times in my life... having a practice that spans nearly a decade, I have used Yoga as a life tool:
After my accident in 2004, it was during my own physical rehabilitation that I started to realize how deep the passion for my practice was. I found myself wanting to share my growing knowledge and appreciation with everyone around me. And soon, Yoga became the cure for everything in my life!!!
The I noticed something:
The more I practiced, the more I learned.
The more I learned, the more I wanted to share.
The more I wanted to share, the more I thought about teaching.
and then it happened...
I completed my formal training & certification program in 2006 and I began teaching.
I currently teach at a resort in Newport Coast. I am blessed to share my mormning practice with amazing people from all over the world. While I do not get to see each of my students progress beyond the length of a vacation, I feel that a spark of interest in a relaxed setting may encourage them to add a little yoga to their life when they get home...
If each student walks away learning ONE little thing about themselves during our time together, then I have succeeded as a teacher..
(PART 3) YOGA RETREAT & CORPORATE WELLNESS COORDINATOR
I have this idea that life is a series of bridges that join ideas and people at different times for various reasons. I will expand on this thought more later - but I see big things on the horizon and plan to bring it all together...
In 2008 I plan to expand on teaching & wellness programs to incorporate travel & business...
until next time,
Namaste~
